J Ryan lives in Den Haag and is represented by Ines de Vos at Jack and Jill International Talent Agency. He has a resident permit, valid passport and is available to work in Europe. Before that he was a NYC theater, tv, film, commercial, and voice over actor and is represented there by Dulcina Eisen Associates. Before the pandemic, he was very pleased to have called the Argyle Theatre his home having performed in 3 productions at the theatre. He was seen there as Grimsby in Disney’s THE LITTLE MERMAID directed and choreographed by Tara Jeanne Vallee, Marvin Shellhammer in MIRACLE ON 34TH ST directed by Evan Pappas, and Elle’s Dad and Winthrop in LEGALLY BLONDE directed and choreographed by Antoinette Dipietropolo.
In 2018 J Ryan was asked to perform as Molina in the KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN TRIBUTE for Hal Prince, John Kander and Chita Rivera at the Chita Awards. The tribute was produced by The American Dance Machine with direction by Lloyd Culbreath and with musical direction by Jeff Saver and Eugene Gwodz.
J Ryan has been seen touring across the country as Carmen Ghia in the national tour of Mel Brook's THE PRODUCERS, directed by Nigel West and choreographed by Lauren Kadel, with original direction and choreography by Susan Stroman. While on tour, he understudied Roger Debris and stepped into the role during the tour’s engagements in Pueblo and Phoenix. He also toured the country in LEGALLY BLONDE as Elle’s Dad and Winthrop. While on tour he understudied the role of Callahan and stepped into the role during the tours engagement in Portland, Maine. He worked with Ann Reinking as a featured performer in the National Tour of FOSSE and also in the International Tour of FOSSE starring Ben Vereen and Ruthie Henshal. Some highlights of the International Tour include performing at Place des Arts in Montreal and at Theatre du Chatelet in Paris. FOSSE was the first American Musical to play at the Chatelet; it received rave reviews and the show’s success paved the way for more American Musicals to play there. Also while in France, J Ryan performed with Ben Vereen and cast on France’s TV show Vive le Monde. J Ryan was the Dance Captain and Swing for the North American Tour of the WIZARD OF OZ, directed by Nigel West and choreographed by Leigh Constantine. While on tour he understudied the Emerald City Guard and stepped into the role numerous times. During the tour, J Ryan had the privilege of performing at Madison Square Garden and at the National Arts Center in Ottawa for Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
You can see him as Brandon in Episode Gabe in 4B on 190 LORIMER, a comedy series directed by Dustin Knoop and now available online at www.pleasantlysurprised.tv . The series was nominated for 6 awards at the Indie Series Awards in LA (including Best Comedy Series), nominated at Hollywood Comedy Shorts, accepted to LA Webfest Class of 2018, nominated and won at Festigious for Best Director and Best Web Series, The Best Web Series - Official Selection (2017), Miami Short Film Festival - Official Selection (2017). He can also be seen playing Jack in the Bollywood film SANJU directed by Rajkumar Hirani, Tom in CAN YOU KEEP A SECRET PROJECT produced by Fiction Riot and directed by Malcom Carter, as a quirky Waiter in MARIAS: THE WEB SERIES “Surprise Episode” (Best Comedy Series Nomination - Miami Web Fest 2021), Casting Director 2 in GREEK HONEY SHOW (pilot - soon to be released), and Fashion Director in LOVE IN NY for TV China. Commercially you can see him as the Athletic Guy in Hair Away commercial, as a Youtuber on NY Interconnect and in Third Wheel Productions’ United Airlines Commercial as an Interviewee. You can also hear him as the voice of John Pickard in the BACHELORS OF BROKEN HILL FARM, a documentary directed by Erika Yeomans (Premiere in NYC at New Filmmakers Alt Fest at Anthology Film Archives and Viewers Choice Award Winner - Toronto International Nollywood Film Festival) and also as Rodion in the children’s animated series SQUARED ZEBRA. And you will see him soon in the Mobiline App ad campaign.
He had another chance to step back into the role of Carmen in another production of THE PRODUCERS at the Eldorado Theater in Reno, NV. He stepped in to the role of Venda in THE WORKSHOP, a workshop at the Manhattan Theater Club and had the privilege to work with Doug Katsaros for the first recording of THE WORKSHOP. He also performed at the Tony Award-winning Utah Shakespeare Festival in PIPPIN, directed and choreographed by Marc Robin, and ALL'S WELL THAT ENDS WELL, directed by J.R. Sullivan.
